Every once in a while we get this question and although we've made a complete video tutorial on how to pad (linked below), this is a topic worth sharing. So, here is a quick tip on how to properly apply padding compound.
The answer to avoiding visible residue when tearing sheets off your pads is simple. Keep it simple - one single, even, light-to-medium coat of padding compound is all that you need to apply. Applying additional coats is really useless. The first coat is what contacts the paper. Additional coats of glue are applied to just the glue, not the paper. Glue on glue does nothing further for paper adhesion - it just builds up more adhesive.
To learn how to properly pad, watch the video below - it covers how to do it with and without a padding press.
