Do you find that your paper drill bits quickly dull or even break right after you replace them? Well, it's a pretty common issue that we hear about a few times a month and the solution is surprisingly simple.
As you continue to use your existing drill bits, the effects of normal use and drill sharpeners will wear away at the tip of the bits and this causes them to shorten in length. After a while you may notice that your bit no longer travels all the way through the stacks of paper when you drill them, so you may have altered your paper drill press depth adjustment to push the travel of the bit down farther.
With the above adjustment made, when you insert a brand new drill bit, the depth adjustment is set way too low and it can damage the new it if you don't first back it off some. The drill bit should always be adjusted so that it goes through the last sheet in your stack and just "kisses" the wood drill block or strip embedded in the table. This should be just the lightest of impressions, any more and you are prematurely dulling your bits and may even be flaring the tips out like a bad pair of bell bottoms!
There are a handful of things that can be done to extend the life of your drill bits and we detailed them in the video below. Just click the image to learn more.
